Illness at Los Gigantes Hotel, Tenerife
Published date:
10 Feb 2010
Irwin Mitchell is being instructed by a growing number of holidaymakers who have suffered illness during holidays at the Los Gigantes Hotel in Tenerife during December 2009 and January 2010. The holidays were booked with Thomson.
One of the holidaymakers has been confirmed as suffering from a salmonella infection, and he has since suffered severe complications which have required emergency treatment at hospital in the UK. He has been unable to work since his holiday.
Karen Bowman also stayed at the Los Gigantes Hotel and she too fell ill during her holiday with an unpleasant gastric illness. Karen and her mum, who was holidaying with her, reported a number of problems with the hotel food. For example, they saw hot porridge being tipped into porridge which had been on display for some time and had gone cold and then being stirred in.
In general, the food was not kept hot enough – in fact, there was a microwave oven provided with a notice next to it saying “if your food in not hot enough please hot it up”. The duo also noticed that serving utensils at the buffet were swapped between dishes. There were dirty tablecloths at breakfast and yoghurts that were at least a week past their sell by date. Drinking cups were dirty with coffee rings on the inside and plates were sometimes dirty with bits of food left on them.
Away from the restaurant, Karen noticed that the glass doors leading onto the balcony in her room were filthy. Also, the mat on the room floor was extremely dirty and there were sewage smells in the bathroom. There was also a smell of sewage in the lounge area. Despite complaining to the hotel staff about these problems, nothing was done to rectify them.

When I tried to deal with the tour operator myself, I got nowhere and I almost lost heart. Without the help of Irwin Mitchell’s travel team, I would have given up.
