We are acting for 72 clients following holidays to the Riu Resort which is a complex including the Riu Mambo Hotel, the Riu Merengue Hotel and the Riu Bachatta Hotel in the Dominican Republic. These all inclusive holidays were booked with the Tour Operator TUI UK.
Whilst staying at the resort clients’ noted many issues with regards to food hygiene at the hotels including food served at the wrong temperature and left uncovered for long periods of time as well as food which appeared to be recycled. Insects and flies were also witnessed in the restaurant areas.
Clients’ started to suffer from gastric illness as a result of food and drink that was consumed as part of their all inclusive packages. Their symptoms included vomiting, stomach cramps, diarrhoea and fever. Many clients required medical treatment whilst staying at the resort including receiving fluids off intravenous drips. Some clients have gone on to develop long term health problems including Irritable Bowel Syndrome as a result of the gastric illness which they contracted in the Dominican Republic and continue to suffer from the on going effects to date.
Amongst the group, we are acting for 2 groups of clients that travelled to the resort as wedding parties. Long planned wedding celebrations were ruined by the illness of family members and friends as well as the bride and groom themselves.
TUI UK Limited had denied liability for the illnesses contracted by the group. Legal proceedings were issued in and a Trial has been listed.
