Leading illness expert lawyers in the International Travel Litigation team at Irwin Mitchell are concerned to have received reports about an outbreak of the serious bacterial infection campylobacter at the Almond Casuarina Beach Resort in Barbados.
Guests have reportedly fallen ill with gastric symptoms including but not limited to severe diarrhoea with some having to change their diet as a result of ongoing gastric symptoms since returning. It has been reported that food was substandard and described as “appalling”. Further complaints suggest that the hotel was dirty, tired, run down and dated. Guests have reported that there was a horrible smell which emanated throughout the public areas of the hotel. The swimming pools were also dirty and not up to the standard expected from the hotel. It is likely that there has been a breakdown in the health and hygiene practices at this hotel as guests experienced symptoms of gastric illness, believed to be campylobacter.
Campylobacter is potentiality a serious infection, symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach pains and cramps, fever, and generally feeling unwell. Such infections can leave permanent symptoms including an alteration of bowel habit, stomach pains and irritable bowel syndrome.
