Bahrain Boat Tragedy

Published date: 30 Jul 2007

Fifty Eight people (including fifteen Britons) died on board the Al Dana dhow when it capsized in the waters off Manama in Bahrain on 30 March 2006. The dhow was hired to celebrate the construction of the World Trade Centre in Bahrain.

We are currently acting for fifty seven clients including the estates of several of the deceased and their relatives as well as a number of survivors of the tragedy.

The Coroner, who held an inquest into the deaths of 9 of our clients, concluded that the deceased died due to the instability of the vessel. The Coroner was also critical of the safety inspection and certification system and lack of appropriately qualified crew.

At a criminal hearing in Bahrain on 23 May 2007, the owner of the vessel, Mr Abdulla Al Kobaisi was convicted of manslaughter and was sentenced to 10 years in prison and the captain, Mr Ramjibhai was sentenced to 3 years in prison. At an appeal hearing on 3rd December 2007, the High Criminal Appeal Court upheld the owner's conviction but reduced his jail sentance from 10 years to five. The captain also appealed but will now serve a full term.

We are continuing to fight for compensation for our clients.
