Irwin Mitchell investigate cause of the Brilliance of the Seas Incident

Mr and Mrs Davey were aboard the Brilliance of the Seas cruise liner, operated by Royal Caribbean Cruises, on 12 December 2010 when a giant wave nearly caused the ship to capsize.

Mr Davey says both he and his wife thought they were going to die as the ship tilted rapidly. "I was sleeping in our 10th floor cabin when suddenly I was thrown completely clear of my bed by the impact of a huge wave on the boat. When I got up to look out of our cabin window I saw another giant wave hurtling towards us. It must have been at least 45 feet tall – Barbara was screaming and we both thought that we were going to die right then."

The next night, Mrs Davey woke, vomiting – she was rushed to hospital where medical staff induced a coma and operated to relieve pressure on her brain. She was airlifted three weeks later to hospital in the UK where Mr Davey made the agonising decision to switch off her life-support machine.

Mr Davey has instructed Irwin Mitchell to investigate the cause of the incident and any link that it might have had to his wife’s unfortunate death.
