In January 2005 more than twenty British tourists were injured when the coach that they were travelling in crashed near the town on Aytos, in Bulgaria. The coach was transporting holidaymakers from the airport at Borjes to their hotel when the driver lost control of the coach and it fell down an embankment.
The passengers had been diverted from Plovdiv to Borjes shortly before they were due to land because of bad weather. It was snowing heavily and there were blizzard conditions.
The coach was not fitted with seatbelts or snow chains, despite the poor weather conditions. It is alleged that the driver was driving too fast, overtaking many other vehicles on the road, including a snow plough.
Crystal/TUI UK Limited, who provided the package holidays, claimed that the accident was caused by a strong gust of wind that blew the coach off the road but, following a three day trial at Birmingham County Court (09.11.09-11.11.09), were forced to accept liability after the Judge ruled that the crash was caused by driver errors.
