Legionnaire’s Disease Claim Following Holiday in Corfu

Irwin Mitchell Solicitors acted for Freda Dunning in a compensation claim, following the legionnaires' disease contracted by her late husband, Harry Dunning.

Mr and Mrs Dunning stayed on a two week package holiday in Corfu at the Costas Golden Beach, Aghios Gordios, Corfu, Greece.

Whilst on holiday, Mr Dunning began to suffer from flu-like symptoms including fever, nausea, sweating and coughing.  At first he thought that he was suffering from sunstroke. His condition progressively deteriorated and he started to cough blood, became delirious and passed black stools. A few days after his return to the United Kingdom, he was admitted to Durham University Hospital where a diagnosis of pneumonia was given.  Two days later Mrs Dunning received a call from the hospital saying that he had contracted Legionnaires’ disease.  He remained in hospital for 17 days.

Mrs Dunning says that her husband never really recovered from this illness and was just “not the same man again”.  She described him as being very lethargic with little energy and he constantly told her that he did not feel well.  He would spend much of his time at home gazing into space or sitting in the garden.  He was unable to return to his hobbies of gardening and swimming and could only walk short distances.

Mr Dunning sadly died less than a year after his return from holiday of unrelated causes.

Following the couples return from Corfu, Irwin Mitchell Solicitors pursued a legionnaires' disease claim on behalf of Mrs Dunning and were successful in recovering damages in the sum of £10,000.
