Compensation for ruined wedding and honeymoon at Barcelo Bavaro
Over £33,000 recovered for ruined wedding and honeymoon at the Barcelo Bavaro Hotel in the Dominican Republic in 2000.
Irwin Mitchell represented a family of 7 who stayed at the Barcelo Bavaro Hotel in June 2000 to celebrate a wedding and honeymoon, which was ruined after every member of the party fell ill. The bride-to-be was taken ill on the eve of her wedding with what was later confirmed as cryptosporidium.
The wedding could not be postponed and so she had to endure the nightmare of not being able to walk to the beach for her wedding without assistance, and she could not eat or drink on her wedding day.
The bride developed permanent Irritable Bowel Syndrome as a direct result of the cryptosporidium infection picked up at the hotel. At trial she was awarded over £29,000 in compensation for her ordeal. The other members of the party recovered fully within 1 – 7 weeks, and following negotiations between tour operator First Choice and Irwin Mitchell, they were awarded compensation totalling £14,000.
