More than £200,000 in compensation recovered following illness at the Riu Resort in the Dominican Republic

Irwin Mitchell have successfully recovered damages of over £200,000 from tour operator TUI UK Limited on behalf of 72 holidaymakers. The settlement was negotiated following legal proceedings being issued against TUI UK Limited who denied liability. All 72 holidaymakers stayed at the Riu Resort which is made up of the Riu Mambo Hotel, Riu Merengue Hotel and Riu Bachata Hotel in the Dominican Republic and went on holiday to the resort between December 2004 and July 2005.

The holidaymakers noted several issues in relation to food quality at the Hotel including food that appeared to be recycled from previous meals, served undercooked and at the wrong temperature.

67 holidaymakers within the group became ill suffering with symptoms including abdominal pains, vomiting and diarrhoea after consuming food and drink from the all inclusive facilities at the Hotel. The illness suffered not only ruined the holidays of these holidaymakers and their families but in some cases the clients are still suffering from the ongoing effects of these illnesses having developed conditions such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome.

The highest award for the most seriously ill of our clients was £16,000.
