Legal 500 – Travel and Holiday Section (2004)
Maria Rosa, Goa, 2000
More than £17,500 recovered for ruined New Year holidays at the Maria Rosa Hotel in Goa, India in 2000.
Irwin Mitchell represented 2 couples whose holidays at the Maria Rosa Hotel, Goa, India in December 2000 – January 2001 were ruined by a breakdown of health and hygiene procedures which caused all 4 of them to fall ill with gastric illness. Our clients complained about the poor standard of the hotel and generally poor food hygiene standards. One of the holidaymakers was later confirmed as suffering salmonella food poisoning. While the 2 of the holidaymakers recovered to full health within 2 – 4 weeks, the other 2 were left with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Tour operator JMC Holidays Ltd (now called Thomas Cook) made a partial admission of liability, and following negotiations we were able to recover over £17,500 in compensation for our clients. The tour operator also agreed to cover their legal costs.
