Two children won almost £9,000 after a stay at the Orquida Hotel, Gran Canaria in 1999
Irwin Mitchell recovered compensation for two children after they went on an all-inclusive holiday at the Orquidea Hotel in Gran Canaria during the summer of 1999. A breakdown in food hygiene procedures at the hotel caused both of them to contract gastric illness and their holidays were ruined as a result. Both of them were later confirmed as suffering salmonella food poisoning.
Tour operator Thomson admitted that it was liable and settlement negotiations resulted in us recovering almost £9,000 in compensation for our clients. The tour operator also agreed to cover their legal costs.

Irwin Mitchell acted for 20 people went on all-inclusive holidays to the Orquidea Hotel in Gran Canaria during July 2000 after a breakdown in food hygiene procedures at the hotel caused over half of them to contract gastric illness. 4 members of the group were diagnosed with salmonella on their return to the UK and the remaining members of the group had similar symptoms. Fortunately most of holidaymakers recovered within 3 weeks, but 3 suffered more long term illness, and were diagnosed with Irritable Bowel Syndrome.
Tour operator Thomson admitted that it was liable for the claims and settlement negotiations resulted in us recovering almost £41,000 in compensation for our clients. The highest award for the most seriously ill of our clients was £6,000. The tour operator also agreed to cover their legal costs.
