414 holidaymakers receive over £822,500 after stay at the Aguamar Hotel, Majorca in summer 2000

Irwin Mitchell recovered damages for 414 holidaymakers who stayed at the Aguamar Hotel, Majorca in summer 2000 after their holidays were ruined because of an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis, linked to the hotel’s swimming pool. 374 of the holidaymakers became ill as a result, and many people were admitted to hospital in Palma. Cryptosporidium infections were confirmed in 93 of the holidaymakers and 98 of the holidaymakers went on to develop permanent Irritable Bowel Syndrome as a result of the infection acquired on holiday.

Irwin Mitchell succeeded in recovering over £822,500 in compensation for their clients.  The highest award for the most seriously ill of their clients was over £18,600.

Mr M went on holiday with his wife and 3 children to the Aguamar Hotel in July 2000.  Within 2 days the family started to fall ill, suffering symptoms such as diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and associated weight loss.  Their symptoms continued on their return to the UK and they were all diagnosed as having suffered a cryptosporidium infection.
 
Mrs M and her children all recovered within 6 weeks to 4 months and their claims were settled between £1,600 and £2,150 each.  Mr M did not  fully recovered from his holiday illness, and medical experts concluded that the original gastrointestinal infection had caused him to develop post infective Irritable Bowel Syndrome, and that such ongoing symptoms were likely to be permanent.  Following negotiations with the Defendant, Mr M’s claim settled for £16,000.
