Workplace accidents

Working abroad is something many aspire to do and an increasing number of people are heading overseas to earn a living. Unfortunately for some, working abroad does not always go smoothly and people experience a variety of accidents whilst they are at work. If you or a member of your family has suffered injury or illness working abroad, legal issues might not be the first thing on your mind.  It is likely that your first thoughts will turn to practical worries such as securing and paying for medical care, dealing with your insurance company and arranging your journey home. We at Irwin Mitchell can take some of the strain, as we have extensive experience of acting for clients who have been injured whilst working abroad.

Basis of claim

Depending on the circumstances of the accident, you may be entitled to pursue a claim against your employer (depending upon your contract of employment) following an accident at your workplace, particularly if your employer had sufficient control over that workplace which is to be found at fault. If this cannot be shown, you may still have a claim against others, for example, the owners of the premises where you worked.

Where can you bring your claim

You may have a choice of which jurisdiction you choose to bring your claim under. It is imperative that you choose the most appropriate country to pursue your claim, which will be governed by that country’s laws. The choice of jurisdiction will make a significant difference to the amount of compensation you could recover and whether you can recover any legal costs. Our extensive experience in dealing with International Travel Claims for those people who have been injured whilst working abroad will enable us to advise you accordingly, to ensure that your claim is brought in the most appropriate country for you. Please let us advise you on this, we are here to help.

Time limit

NOTE!! Time limits in which your claim can be brought can vary throughout the world, with some countries only allowing an injured person a year to bring their claim. It is therefore important that you contact us as soon as possible for advice, so that we can take the appropriate action to protect your right in bringing a claim.  Remember, we offer a FREE initial consultation.
