Cryptosporidium

Human infection occurs when Cryptosporidium Oocysts (the hardy cyst stage of the parasites lifecycle) are taken in by mouth and can be acquired by three main routes:

  • From other people
  • From animals
  • From drinking water contaminated from either agricultural or human sewage sources

The symptoms suffered can include:

  • Diarrhoea, which may be profuse and watery
  • Stomach cramps and bloating
  • Fever
  • Weight loss
