British Tourists Injured In Turkish Hot Air Balloon Accident
We are pursuing claims for compensation for four British tourists following a hot air balloon accident in Turkey in May 2009. Dr Geraldine Wright and Mr David Mosca, two of our clients, signed up for an ill-fated hot air balloon excursion with Kapadokya Balloons whilst holidaying in Cappadocia, Turkey. As their trip began the balloon they were travelling in collided with another balloon and plummeted back to the ground. One passenger, leading British space scientist Dr Kevin Beurle, was tragically killed.
Our clients were amongst 11 people onboard the hot air balloon – 10 passengers and one pilot – when the crash occurred. Our clients sustained severe injuries resulting in them being hospitalised for a week in Turkey where Dr Wright was treated for multiple injuries, including a severe fracture and nerve damage to her spine, whilst Mr Mosca had to undergo an operation to repair severe damage to his back.
Dr Wright has said: “The damage to the nerves in my spine meant I couldn’t return to work until January (2010) and the ongoing symptoms I have been left with have meant that I am no longer able to work full time. It has been an extremely difficult time.”
“When we set off on the excursion, there were three balloons leaving with the same company and from the same field. Ours was the last to go up and as soon as we did, several people commented on how close the balloons were to each other.
“That’s when I looked up and saw the outline of the second balloon above us, next thing I saw their basket was touching our canopy and tore a huge hole in it. As we descended I was knocked unconscious, I was later told that we had fallen 400 feet.”
Following their ordeals both Mr Mosca and Dr Wright contacted us in their battle for justice and we have since commenced Court proceedings in Turkey. The criminal and civil investigations are still ongoing with a hearing date unlikely for at least 12 months.
