Hotel Barcelo Tambor, Nicoya Peninsular
Irwin Mitchell is highly concerned for holidaymakers who are returning from or are due to stay at the Hotel Barcelo Tambor within the Nicoya Peninsular of Costa Rica after receiving reports that an illness has swept through the all-inclusive resort. The hotel was forced to close by health officials during the festive holidays after hundreds of guests fell ill with symptoms of an acute gastric illness.
One family has recalled how, what should have been a picturesque vacation, the family spent the remainder of the holiday eating from a limited menu in a quarantined section of a San Jose Hotel. They were also sent to a nearby hospital for health check-ups and tests. According to the Health Ministry, approximately 225 people were affected by the illness, which is said to have been transmitted by contaminated food and person to person contact.
As a result, the resort was ordered to close on the 27th December, during which time the swimming pools were drained and the food and water was tested. Eight days later, the hotel was allowed to re-open. It is reported that the Health Officials found traces of Salmonella in samples of the chicken taken from the hotel's kitchen. A nurse also had to be flown in to assist the holidaymakers after the Hotel's doctor also fell ill with the same gastric symptoms.
