Boudicca Cruise Ship, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines

Travel law experts at Irwin Mitchell representing over a hundred passengers who fell ill while travelling on Fred Olsen’s Boudicca cruise ship in 2009 and 2010 are once again demanding answers, after being instructed by dozens of passengers who travelled onboard the Boudicca in April and May 2012 after reports revealed that 170 people are believed to have been hit by a new outbreak of illness.

Around 800 passengers and 300 crewmembers were believed to be on board the ship when the latest outbreak of illness occurred during a 13-day trip to the Canary Islands which began at the start of this month.

According to reports, an elderly passenger also suffered a heart attack during the journey although it has not been confirmed whether this was linked to the outbreak. Passengers onboard the ship also apparently started referring to it as ‘HMS Holby City’.

Over many years Irwin Mitchell’s specialist international travel team has successfully acted for hundreds of cruise passengers who have suffered serious health problems due to illness outbreaks on board cruise ships.

The firm also represents over 130 Passengers affected by illness who travelled on board the Boudicca between 2009 and 2010. In addition, the firm act for passengers who became ill on cruises on board the Boudicca during 2011 and others who were affected by illness during a cruise on the ship which disembarked in May 2012.

Clive Garner, head of the team of travel law specialists, said: “This is now the fourth consecutive year that we have received complaints about illness onboard the Boudicca. We are already acting for a number of passengers who fell ill on this ship who disembarked in May 2012. To hear reports of a further outbreak of illness among passengers on board the Boudicca is a cause of alarm.

"There are clear guidelines in place to minimise the risk of food borne or other illness spreading amongst passengers. We and our clients want to understand whether all reasonable steps were taken by Fred Olsen to tackle the problems on board the Boudicca. This includes whether any deep-clean procedures have been adequately carried out. We also want to understand whether adequate warnings have been given to passengers before they boarded the Boudicca about the risk of them contracting illness once on board, particularly as passengers on board the ship in April and early May had experienced severe illness. This was only a few days before passengers on the latest cruise were struck down with similar symptoms.

“We urge Fred Olsen cruises to immediately conduct a thorough review of standards on board the Boudicca and we ask them to take all necessary steps to safeguard the health of future passengers."

If you have suffered from gastric illness following your stay on the board the Boudicca, Irwin Mitchell would like to hear from you as you may be able to claim for the pain and suffering caused by the illness that you sustained.
