Keith and Jane Kiddell went on a Nile Cruise on Wednesday 23rd September 2009 for 7 nights after booking a Package Holiday with Thomas Cook.
Prior to becoming ill they noted that food appeared to be re-served on occasions as items that had appeared at one meal would seem to be stewed and served at the next. On one occasion whilst eating beef cubes, they complain that the meat did not taste at all nice and had to be left.
They also noted on one occasion when they retrieved a bottle of water from the fridge in their cabin that the seal was broken. Although they both drank the water, they suspected afterwards that it may have been a bottle topped up with tap water.
Mrs Kiddell became ill 3 days into their holiday and suffered symptoms of diarrhoea and vomiting. Mr Kiddell also became ill and visited the doctors following his return home where he provided a stool. He received a telephone call on 9th October asking him to attend Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital where he was advised that he had contracted E-Coli 0157 strain.
He was admitted to hospital as his knee had also swelled up. He was informed by the hospital that the E-Coli had caused this to happen necessitating that he receive injections to ease the swelling. He spent two days in hospital.
A few days later, a doctor called at their house stating that he had been sent by Environmental Health confirming that Mrs Kiddell had also been diagnosed as suffering E-Coli 0157.
Mrs Kiddell works on the check-out counter at a leading supermarket chain and was told that she would only be allowed to return work if she was re-positioned as she would not be allowed in close proximity of fresh foods.
Mr Kiddell still remains sick from work as he struggles with his knee since the illness. Due to the nature of his work as a security guard he is unable to keep any weight on his knee for prolonged periods of time.
