Oriana Cruise March 2014

Irwin Mitchell has been contacted by passengers who have suffered illness during a cruise on board P&O’s Oriana Cruise ship in March 2014.

Passengers have reported to us that they suffered from diarrhoea, vomiting and abdominal pains and as a result had to be confined to their cabins. Illness was said to have been rife on the ship with passengers reporting that there may have been up to a hundred people who were ill. One passenger reported that there was a whole corridor on one deck, where the majority of the passengers were struck down with illness.

Despite some positive reviews, passengers have reported that some of the food such as eggs were not cooked properly and were watery, and that some of the plastic cups in the bar were said to be dirty. Passengers have also reported some problems with the plumbing on board the ship with the toilets on occasion not working.

Irwin Mitchell’s specialist illness team, which acts for victims of outbreaks on board cruise ships and in holiday resorts across the world, successfully represented passengers who holidayed on the Oriana in 2011 and December 2012 and also acts for almost 20 passengers who travelled on the vessel in May 2013.

Commenting on the latest reports, Suki Chhokar, an expert in illness claims at Irwin Mitchell, said: “We are very concerned about the latest reports which have emerged in relation to the Oriana’s most recent two trips.

“While very little is known at this point, it is clear that passengers on board the vessel and their families will be keen for answers regarding how these issues emerged as well as what is being done to prevent them from happening again in the future.

“Cruise ship operators have strict hygiene and safety guidelines which they need to follow in order to manage such issues and it is likely that the handling of these problems will also come under scrutiny.

“The impact that illness problems of this nature have on people should not be underestimated and we have seen numerous cases when victims have gone on to suffer long-term health problems as a result of issues during what were supposed to be relaxing breaks.

“Many answers are needed in relation to these latest reports and we hope, for the sake of all of those affected, that these can be provided as soon as possible."

If you have suffered from gastric illness following your stay on board the Oriana, Irwin Mitchell would like to hear from you as you may be able to claim for your illness.
