Leading illness expert lawyers in the International Travel Litigation team at Irwin Mitchell are concerned to receive reports of gastric illness at the Barcelo Marina Palace in Cuba. This is not the first time we have had reports of illness at this resort having successfully representing clients who holidayed at this resort in 2008 and recovered in excess of £10,000.
More recently in 2012, we have heard that holidaymakers have suffered from the serious bacterial infection Salmonella. Guests have fallen ill with gastric symptoms including severe diarrhoea and abdominal pain. There is a report of one guest being bedridden for 10 days due to the severity of her symptoms. Infections such as Salmonella can leave permanent symptoms including an alteration of bowel habit, frequent stomach pains and irritable bowel syndrome.
Reports indicate that the cause of the gastric illnesses may have been due to the poor quality of food and lack of hygiene standards at the hotel. The hotel was described as being less than the 5 stars it is advertised as. Food was said to be “beyond bad” with bland and tasteless food. Meat was served cold. Guests have reported seeing staff use tongs for raw chicken, then using the same tongs to pick up meat and fish. There are also complaints of chipped coffee mugs and plates being used in the restaurants.
The complaints just don’t stop there. The hotel room was said to be in poor order with broken toilet facilities and broken furniture amongst other things.  Customer service was said to be poor with many complaints about the service in the restaurant and the rudeness of the hotel staff.
