Hotel Playa Pesquero, Holguin, Cuba - March 2012
Irwin Mitchell have concerns for holidaymakers who have recently travelled to the Hotel Playa Pesquero, Holguin, in Cuba, particularly for those holidays taken in February 2012 as holidaymakers are returning suffering from symptoms of gastric illness.
Reports would indicate that the cause of the gastric illness may have been due to the poor quality of food and lack of hygiene standards practiced at the hotel. In particular, it is suggested that the restaurant was poorly organised and that some meats were served under-cooked. Holidaymakers have also reported how they saw the kitchen staff were using the same utensils and gloves to handle both raw and cooked meats. The illnesses contracted could be due to such a breakdown in food handling and hygiene procedures.
It is reported that guests suffered from symptoms including violent sickness and diarrhoea. Irwin Mitchell is currently acting for clients who stayed at the Playa Pesquero in 2008 and 2009 and we are deeply concerned that tour operators are failing to provide adequate standards of health and hygiene at this hotel to protect client's from illness. Even more concerning is that we received similar reports of illness following holidays taken in 2011 and now 2012.
It has also been suggested by reports that the hotel was poorly maintained as the bedrooms were not cleaned sufficiently and were basic. The wardrobes were broken and that drawers would not open or close properly.
