Irwin Mitchell’s leading travel litigation team has been approached by a number of holidaymakers returning their holidays at the ClubHotel Riu Merengue in the Dominican Republic complaining of severe gastric illness.
Most recent reports of illness are from July 2013, however, we have successfully acted for hundreds of holidaymakers who have holidayed at the ClubHotel Riu Merengue in the summers of 2004, 2005 and 2008 who also fell ill with severe gastric symptoms, allegedly as a result of the poor standards of food hygiene at the hotel. More recently, we have successfully settled the cases of 42 holidaymakers who returned with illness from the Riu Bachata which is the sister hotel at the same resort.
We are concerned to hear recent reports indicating that the cause of the gastric illness may have been due to the poor quality of food and lack of hygiene standards at the hotel with reports of insects around some food serving stations. In particular, the holidaymakers have reported that food was sometimes served undercooked and on occasion recycled food was displayed uncovered for long periods of time. It is reported that guests suffered from symptoms including violent diarrhoea, vomiting and stomach cramps.
