Gran Bahia Principe La Romana, Bayahibe

Irwin Mitchell acts for Natalie Spencer and Alex Doe who suffered gastric illness during their stay at the Gran Bahia Principe Hotel in Bayahibe, Dominican Republic in November/December 2009.  The couple booked their package holiday through First Choice, which is part of the TUI UK Ltd holiday company.

Natalie and Alex both fell ill a few days into their 2 week break.  They were so ill that they had to be seen by the resort doctor, at a cost of $700.  They were put onto IV drips due to being dehydrated.  They were too ill to leave their rooms for 4 days, and they were unwell for the remainder of their holidays.

The couple noticed that food was often served undercooked, in particular that sausages were pink inside and omelettes were runny. They also saw that food was served uncovered and a lot of the time the same food would be left out all day.  Food that should have been served hot was only lukewarm, and cold food such as yoghurt had curdled.  They also saw birds flying around the hotel restaurants and landing on tables and cutlery.

Alex said "We are gutted about our holiday, as it took us a long time to save our money so that we could afford it.  Also, we were told by First Choice that it was a 5 star hotel so we expected good things – it turns out to have been a holiday from hell. We lost weight from being ill, had no sun tan and looked ill when arrived back from holiday."
