Irwin Mitchell’s specialist International Personal Injury lawyers have been contacted by holidaymakers who suffered gastrointestinal illness following their stay at the Gran Ventana Resort, Dominican Republic in June 2017.

The holidaymakers suffered from gastric illness symptoms including diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever, and nausea. They have since tested positive for cryptosporidium infections.

The holidaymakers told us that the food served inside the buffet restaurant did not always seem adequately covered. They also noticed that new food was sometimes added to existing food that had already been served.

Flies and birds were also noticed around the food serving area and the restaurant appeared generally unclean. The swimming pool was reportedly littered with debris and was occasionally contaminated with faeces.

Gastric symptoms can range from mild diarrhoea to abdominal cramps and blood in stools. Having significant experience in assisting those unfortunate enough to contract gastric illness, we know the long term conditions that can be associated with it, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

Dr Linzi Thomas, an expert in Gastroenterology, has commented that “Many patients develop IBS for the first time following a bout of food poisoning or gastroenteritis. Of patients who initially suffer with post infective IBS, 50% will have on-going symptoms at one year, however 2 and 3 years later 34.3% and 34.8% respectively will have on-going symptoms showing that the figures plateau, indicating that the prospect of recovery unfortunately becomes less likely.”
