Riu Bambu Hotel Illness
We are concerned to received reports of the ongoing illness at the Rui Bambu hotel in the Dominican Republic during August 2011.
Reports confirm that holidaymakers have been struck down with illness whilst staying at this hotel with one client informing that a stool sample confirmed that he suffered from salmonella poisoning.
Irwin Mitchell currently for holidaymakers who are proceeding with claims following a holiday to the Riu Bambu hotel in the Dominican Republic in 2010 and 2008. These all inclusive holidays were booked with the Tour Operator Thompson Holidays.
The clients fell ill after arriving at the hotel with symptoms such as diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, headache and nausea which continued even after returning home. One client in particular had a confirmed stool sample confirming that he had contracted Shigella whilst on holiday at this hotel.
The clients had concerns with regards to the food hygiene at the hotel. They noticed in particular that the food was prepared well in advance, so the buffet style food would be left exposed for long periods of time. The general quality of the food was poor; the meat was noted to be undercooked, in particular the chicken which was pink in the centre. Food was also left uncovered, with fresh food being put on top of old food.
Further complaints that the client’s raised were that the staff at the hotel were very unhelpful and didn’t deal with the complaints adequately. The pool water appeared to be cloudy and there were birds seen in the restaurant. The clients also found dead cockroaches in their rooms when they arrived which indicates that rooms were prepared well in advance and not checked regularly.
