We’ve been contacted by a couple who stayed at the Jaz Aquamarine Hotel in Egypt after one of them fell ill while they were on holiday there in November 2015.

The man suffered gastric illness during the trip and describes symptoms of diarrhoea, vomiting, stomach cramps, and a fever.

He says that he told the hotel about his illness and was referred to the onsite doctor. Since returning to the UK he continues to suffer from sickness.

We were already concerned to hear reports of gastric illness from guests who holidayed at the resort during February 2016 and also November and December 2015. 

Though the hotel has enjoyed some positive reviews, we heard about holidaymakers who became ill during their stay there. One guest claims they saw an employee at one of the pool cafes “use the toilet and then return straight behind the counter without washing his hands”. There were complaints from other tourists that some of the food was “always cold”. Several people fell ill with gastric symptoms and one couple even ended up in hospital on a drip.

Gastric symptoms can range from mild diarrhoea to abdominal cramps and blood in stools. We have significant experience helping those unlucky enough to contract gastric illness while on holiday. We’re very aware of the complications that can develop because of such illness, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). The effects can sometimes develop into a problem that is long-term, or even permanent.
