Bahia Principe Resort Akumal, 2016

We're concerned to learn about guests falling ill with gastric symptoms while on holiday at the Bahia Principe Resort Akumal in June 2016.

Our International Personal Injury team have been contacted by a family of four who travelled to the resort. Some members of the family - including two small children - developed severe diarrhoea, abdominal cramps, nausea and lethargy during their stay.

The holidaymakers had suspicions that the meat served at the resort was on occasions cooked incorrectly: for example, some foods were served lukewarm. The holidaymakers were concerned that at times buffet food was being topped up with new food, rather than the old food being replaced. There were also flies on the food at times.

Those affected by illness had to seek medical treatment and also noted complaints about the general quality of the resort facilities. They reported there sometimes being floating matter on the pool and on occasions litter near the jacuzzi area.

Jennifer Mullins, a Solicitor and International Personal Injury lawyer at Irwin Mitchell, said: “We have now heard first-hand reports from the guests of the standards they experienced at the Bahia Principe Resort Akumal and we have a number of serious concerns.

“It is worrying to hear that other holidaymakers may have suffered the same problems as these guests during their stay at the hotel. We would urge anyone else who suffered problems at the hotel to get in touch as they may be able to help with our investigations.”

Gastric symptoms can range from mild diarrhoea to abdominal cramps and blood in stools. Having significant experience in assisting those unfortunate enough to contract gastric illness, we know first-hand the potential long term conditions that can be associated with it, such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).

If you also travelled to the Bahia Principe Resort Akumal and subsequently suffered symptoms of illness, we'd like to hear from you. We specialise in dealing with cases of this nature and could help you claim compensation.

"We were very happy with the outcome of our case, especially as we were initially offered nothing from the Tour Operator. Irwin Mitchell were very professional throughout and we are very happy with the outcome."
