The International Personal Injury Team at Irwin Mitchell are concerned to learn of recent reports of guests falling ill with gastric symptoms during holidays taken at the Iberostar Paraiso Del Mar in Mexico between August 2016 and January 2017.

Despite positive reviews, Irwin Mitchell have learnt of reports regarding holidaymakers who fell ill during a stay at the hotel. One holidaymaker claims that they saw a cook on one occasion “use the same spatula to cut and separate raw chicken and flip and manoeuvre eggs” and that some of the cooks were “handling cooked food with their bare hands”. Other holidaymakers report falling ill with gastric symptoms with two subsequently diagnosed with Salmonella including an eight year old boy.

Salmonella infection is a bacterial disease of the intestinal tract. Salmonella is a group of bacteria that cause typhoid fever, food poisoning, gastroenteritis, enteric fever and other illnesses. Holidaymakers become infected mostly through contaminated water or foods, especially meat, poultry and eggs.

Gastric symptoms can range from mild diarrhoea to abdominal cramps and blood in stools. Having significant experience in assisting those unfortunate enough to contract gastric illness Irwin Mitchell know the potential long term effects that can be associated with such illness, with sometimes permanent long term complications arising such as Post infective Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
