Sandos Caracol Eco Resort and Spa, Riveria Maya - 2016
The International Personal Injury Team is currently representing two families who became ill at the Sandos Caracol, in Mexico in June 2016.
The families were on all inclusive holidays at the resort. Members of both family fell ill and two of the children have been since been diagnosed with gastro intestinal infections caused by cryptosporidium. Their symptoms include diarrhoea, vomiting, nausea and stomach cramps. Both families sought treatment from the GP following their return to the UK.
Cryptosporidium is a parasitic organism which causes infection in the intestine. Outbreaks of this infection have been linked to drinking or swimming in contaminated water. It can result in severe acute symptoms; and in some instance can result in longer term consequences, including the development of irritable bowel syndrome.
Despite positive reviews of the hotel online, some holidaymakers who have visited the Sandos Caracol Resort have complained about the quality of the food, which some describe as only lukewarm. Some guess report seeing animals such as Coati (a racoon-like creature) taking food off plates in the outside snack bar at the hotel. Others have complained about the quality of the water in the swimming pools and missing tiles in the pool. Some tourists also made reference to the fact that others at the hotel had fallen ill.
Having significant experience in assisting those unfortunate enough to contract gastric illness we know first-hand the potential long term effects that it can bring, sometimes even resulting in permanent complications such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS). We will be investigating the cause of illness on behalf of the holidaymakers who has contacted us and hope the tour operator will work with us to establish why holidaymakers fell ill.
