Iberostar Saidia, Morocco, 2016

Irwin Mitchell have been contacted by a British family who travelled to the Iberostar, Saidia, Morocco in September 2016.

The majority of the family have become ill with symptoms including diarrhoea, nausea, vomiting, stomach cramps and fever. One member of the family has been diagnosed as suffering with Cryptosporidium after seeking treatment from their doctor on return to the UK.

Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite. There are different species of Cryptosporidium and some of these species infect humans. The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods of time and makes it resistant to chlorine.

While this parasite can be spread in several different ways, outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis arising from holidays abroad have been linked to drinking or swimming in contaminated water. The most common symptoms include diarrhoea and stomach cramps and young children aged between 1 and 5 years old are most commonly affected.

Having significant experience in assisting those unfortunate enough to contract gastric illness and those diagnosed with Cryptosporidium we know first-hand the potential long term effects that can be associated with such illness, with sometimes permanent long term complications arising such as Post infective Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
