Be Live Family Costa los Gigantes, 2016

Irwin Mitchell have been contacted by a British mother who travelled to the Be Live Family Costa los Gigantes in Playa de la Arena, Spain with her young family in October 2016 for an all inclusive holiday.

The mother, her husband and their oldest daughter all became ill while staying at the resort with symptoms including diarrhoea and stomach cramps. They sought medical attention once they were back in the UK and their daughter was diagnosed with Cryptosporidium.

Cryptosporidium is a microscopic parasite. There are different species of Cryptosporidium and some of these species infect humans. The parasite is protected by an outer shell that allows it to survive outside the body for long periods of time and makes it resistant to chlorine. While this parasite can be spread in several different ways, outbreaks of cryptosporidiosis arising from holidays abroad have been linked to drinking or swimming in contaminated water.

The most common symptoms include diarrhoea and stomach cramps and young children aged between 1 and 5 years old are most commonly affected.

Despite some positive reviews, other holidaymakers have complained about a sewage smell around the pool and nearby toilets, cockroaches seen in and around the restaurant and some of the food being served lukewarm. Other holidaymakers have also complained of gastric illness affecting guests including families and young children.

Gastric symptoms can range from mild diarrhoea to abdominal cramps and blood in the stools. Having significant experience in assisting those unfortunate enough to contract gastric illness we know first-hand the potential long term effects that can be associated with such illness, with sometimes permanent long term complications arising such as Post infective Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

If you have traveled to the Be Live Family Costa los Gigantes in Playa de le Arena, Spain and subsequently suffered from symptoms of gastric illness or sustained an injury, Irwin Mitchell, who specialise in dealing with cases of such nature, would like to hear from you.

"We were very happy with the outcome of our case, especially as we were initially offered nothing from the Tour Operator. Irwin Mitchell were very professional throughout and we are very happy with the outcome."
