The International Personal Injury team at Irwin Mitchell has been instructed by a group of 13 British holidaymakers who became ill whilst staying at the Club Omar Khayam Hotel in Hammamet, Tunisia, during August 2014.
Alarmingly, upon the group’s return to the UK one of the holidaymakers was diagnosed with Legionnaires disease whilst another was diagnosed with a Salmonella infection. Members of the party fell ill just days into their holiday, with a number suffering from symptoms including diarrhoea and stomach cramps.
Despite some positive reviews, some guests have complained about the hygiene standards at the hotel. The group reported that on occasions they saw faeces in the hotel’s swimming pool and have advised that the toilets in the pool area were often unclean.
Our clients have also expressed that the hot food in the restaurant was often served lukewarm and described that birds and cats were allowed to roam in the restaurant area. Furthermore, the group noted that some of the food appeared to be recycled between meals.
Other visitors who stayed at the resort in August and September 2014 have also suggested that they suffered from stomach upsets. Further complaints have included holidaymakers finding a dirty highchair in the hotel restaurant and the toilets often having no soap or toilet roll available. Some of the food at the resort has been described as “terrible” with items such as turkey sometimes being undercooked and not always being served at an appropriate temperature.
