Surmeli Efes Hotel, Turkish Aegean Coast, Turkey

The specialist International Travel Litigation Team here at Irwin Mitchell are concerned for holidaymakers after reading reports of gastric illness, suspected to be food poisoning, at the Surmeli Efes Hotel along the Turkish Aegean Coast in Turkey. Most recent reports relate to holidays taken in March 2012. 

Worryingly, it is not the first time our concerns have been raised in relation to this hotel. Guests who travelled to the hotel during August 2010 also returned with nothing but bad memories, along with a variety of gastric symptoms. One report stated that there was a bad smell in the room, but the room was dark on their arrival so they went straight to bed. Upon waking, they discovered that the smell was actually that of dry vomit which was on the floor and walls.

There were also reports that many suffering guests staying at the hotel were treated by the resort doctor with an IV drip in an attempt to rehydrate their bodies.
More recently, holidaymakers staying at the hotel in March 2012 have reported how, after eating a bland diet of chicken and rice all week, they began to feel ill. They then began to shiver and experienced symptoms of severe diarrhoea. Symptoms of food poisoning often include stomach cramps, diarrhoea, vomiting and lethargy and can often be caused due to a breakdown in food hygiene and handling procedures.  

It has also been reported how the holidaymakers travelled to the hotel expecting to relax in one of the three luxurious pools. Upon their arrival, all three pools were closed due to the hotel not being in peak season, something they were not told about before travelling.
