Pontins Brean Sands Holiday Park, Burnham-on-Sea
Our specialist Public Health lawyers are representing a family who fell ill after a weekend break at the Pontins Brean Sands Holiday Park in Burnham-on-Sea in July 2015.
The family travelled to the resort in the south-west of England for an enjoyable mini holiday – but on their arrival they found rotten food in the fridge left by the previous occupants, which left a horrible smell in the room. One of the beds in the chalet was also broken – this had to be reported to the reception staff to be repaired. The family told us that the restaurant was sometimes left untidy and messy by other holidaymakers, and that cutlery was mixed up in the buffet area by other guests. They also reported seeing food left on the floor and on tables. The complained that on one occasion the swimming pool was closed because faeces were found in it.
All but one member of the family were struck down with gastric illness on their return home. They had to seek medical treatment from their GP and one of them, having provided a stool sample, was diagnosed with campylobacter, a serious bacterial infection.
Jatinder Paul, an Associate Solicitor at Irwin Mitchell, said “Our clients’ holiday was ruined due to the hotel’s conditions . They were then hit with serious illness on their return, and subsequently one family member was diagnosed with a serious bacterial infection. Their holiday will now be remembered for all the wrong reasons. Some of the family continue to suffer from symptoms – we will now be conducting our own investigations as to the cause of our client’s’ illness.”
