Riu Garopa Hotel, Cape Verde

Irwin Mitchell has been approached to act for a number of holidaymakers who travelled to the Riu Garopa, Cape Verde, in March 2011 and had their holiday spoilt by illness.

One holidaymaker told us that they fell ill with gastric symptoms including diarrhoea, stomach cramps, fever and lethargy. The holidaymakers have described worrying examples of very poor food hygiene standards in the hotel.

There have also been complaints of poor health and hygiene conditions in the hotel as well as poor sanitation standards.

Another holidaymaker complained of the terrible sewage smell in the Hotel and referred to the hotel’s restaurant having severe problems with flies, cats and dogs all regularly being in the same area as the food which was often left uncovered.

The following quality and food complaints have been made:

  • Food was not served at the correct temperature
  • Chicken was served while pink inside
  • Bottled water was rationed out by the Hotel
  • Guests were not allowed to leave the complex at night

Even more concerning is that Irwin Mitchell has previously acted for other clients who travelled to the Riu Garopa Hotel in 2008 and 2009.

Irwin Mitchell acts for 94 clients who travelled to this hotel in the summer of 2008. Some of them contracted Shigella and needed medical treatment and have suffered long-term effects. TUI UK Limited admitted liability in this instance and have so far paid in excess of £50,000.00 in damages to a portion of the clients. Irwin Mitchell is currently in settlement negotiations on behalf of the remaining clients.

Irwin Mitchell also acts on behalf of 6 clients who holidayed at the hotel in 2009, one of whom returned a positive diagnosis for Shigella poisoning. One case continues to date and Irwin Mitchell has so far recovered in excess of £13,000.00 on behalf of the 6 Claimants.
