Sun Village Hotel

Compensation recovered after ruined family holiday at the Sun Village Hotel, Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

Irwin Mitchell represented a family who booked an all inclusive holiday with tour operator Thomson at the Rui Hotel in the Dominican Republic in April 2005. However, 2 days before they were due to travel they were informed that there had been an outbreak of illness at the Riu Hotel and that they would be placed in alternative accommodation, the Sun Village Hotel.  Within 3 days of arriving at the Sun Village Hotel one member of the family fell ill with violent diarrhoea, high blood pressure, a fever and abdominal pain.  He was seen by a local doctor, who gave him injections and placed him on a drip.  The doctor saw him twice daily for the rest of his holiday, by which time he had lost 18 lbs in weight.  After returning home, he was off work for a week.  His and his family’s holiday was ruined by the illness, which was due to a breakdown in food hygiene procedures at the hotel.

Following negotiations with Thomson, Irwin Mitchell was able to recover £2,500 in compensation for the family.  The tour operator also agreed to cover their legal costs.

"We were very happy with the outcome of our case, especially as we were initially offered nothing from the Tour Operator. Irwin Mitchell were very professional throughout and we are very happy with the outcome."
