Illness Outbreaks at Gran Canaria Princess Hotel, Gran Canaria
Irwin Mitchell were successful in recovering damages from the tour operator TUI UK Limited on behalf of 50 holidaymakers who stayed at the Gran Canaria Princess Hotel in Gran Canaria after their holidays were ruined by an outbreak of illness.
Holidaymakers complained about the quality of the accommodation, attitude of the hotel staff and tour operator representatives, and about the poor food hygiene standards.
A number of the Claimants were diagnosed as being infected with salmonella. Some of the Claimants suffered acute symptoms which were so serious that they required admission to hospital. Many went on to develop permanent complications including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which continues to have a significant ongoing effect on their lives.
TUI UK Limited denied liability for the Claimants illness. However, following negotiations with the Defendant’s Legal Representatives settlement has been reached in respect of all 50 cases.
Irwin Mitchell succeeded in recovering over £117,000 in compensation for our clients.
Mr Jones was part of the group of 50 holidaymakers.
Mr Jones arranged a holiday for himself and his partner, through TUI UK Limited, at the Gran Canaria Princess Hotel, Gran Canaria.
During his stay he contracted a severe gastric illness as a result of the poor hygiene standards at the hotel, most probably in respect of food preparation. Medical evidence was obtained from Dr Rees (gastroenterologist) to assist with the claim.
Mr Jones was required to prove his illness was contracted on holiday and that the long term symptoms were directly related to the individual illness suffered on holiday. The permanent ongoing symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome have impacted on Mr Jones’s social life, to the extent that he goes out socialising with his friends and family much less now.
Mr Jones recovered £5750 in compensation.
