Belvedere Hotel

We've received a report of illness from a holidaymaker who travelled to the Belvedere Hotel in Italy in July 2015. A hospital in the UK has since diagnosed him with Legionnaires' disease.

He fell ill towards the end of his holiday at the hotel, suffering from nausea, muscle pains, a sore neck and dehydration.

Upon return home his health started to deteriorate quite quickly and he became disorientated, suffering from a fever. In addition, he began to wheeze and his wife was worried that he was struggling to breathe. She contacted their GP who referred her husband to hospital.

Medical staff at the hospital carried out a number of tests on him and he was placed on an IV drip. His wife was extremely concerned to see how quickly her husband’s health had deteriorated.

The hospital confirmed he had contracted Legionnaires’ disease. Upon release from hospital the holidaymaker still hasn't fully recovered. He describes feeling very lethargic and has lost his appetite. As a result of this he has lost some weight.

Legionnaires’ disease is a potentially deadly infection often caused by poor maintenance of water systems. There are strict controls in place to reduce the risk of Legionella infection.
