More than £3.2million compensation recovered following illness at the Alcudia Pins Hotel, Majorca
More than 1,900 holidaymakers recovered over £3.2 million after an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis at the Alcudia Pins Hotel, Majorca. A number of holidaymakers were left with long term symptoms including irritable bowel syndrome.
We were successful in recovering damages from tour operator My Travel on behalf of over 1,900 holidaymakers who stayed at the Alcudia Pins Hotel, Majorca between June and September 2003 after their holidays were ruined by an outbreak of cryptosporidiosis.
Holidaymakers complained about the quality of the accommodation, attitude of the hotel staff and tour operator representatives, cleanliness in and around the swimming pools and poor food hygiene standards. On 23 July 2003, after hundreds of guests had fallen ill with gastric symptoms, a water sample was taken from the hotel’s main swimming pool and tested. The results revealed that the pool was contaminated with the waterborne parasite cryptosporidium. The swimming pool was closed for 2 weeks and disinfected. Despite this, holidaymakers continued to fall ill for the rest of the summer season.
More than 400 of the Claimants were diagnosed as being infected with the cryptosporidium parasite. Other gastric infections were also diagnosed. Some of the Claimants suffered acute symptoms which were so serious that they required admission to hospital. Many, including children, went on to develop permanent complications including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which continue to have a significant ongoing effect on their lives.
We succeeded in recovering over £3,290,000 in compensation for our clients. The tour operator also agreed to cover their legal costs. The highest award for the most seriously ill of our clients was over £18,000.
Maxine from Ayrshire went on holiday with her family to the Alcudia Pins Hotel in Majorca in June / July 2003. Towards the end of the holiday her daughter fell ill with an acute gastric illness, and the rest of the family fell ill with similar symptoms after they returned home. Maxine was diagnosed as suffering a cryptosporidium infection. Maxine’s husband and son both fully recovered within 2 – 3 weeks. However, Maxine and her young daughter both developed Irritable Bowel Syndrome as a direct result of their gastric infections, which they have been told is likely to be permanent. The tour operator initially offered them £500 each in compensation. However, with our help Maxine’s husband and son recovered £2,820 and £2,350 respectively. Maxine’s daughter recovered £15,750 and Maxine herself recovered £14,350. Maxine said “Thank you for everything you did in fighting our case against Airtours. We couldn’t have done it without you.”
Joseph from Glasgow stayed at the Alcudia Pins Hotel with his wife and daughter (aged 3 at the time) in July 2003. During the holiday they all fell ill with an acute gastric illness. His daughter was diagnosed as being infected with the cryptosporidium parasite. Joseph’s wife was fully recovered within 2 weeks and his daughter within 2½ months, but Joseph has since developed Irritable Bowel Syndrome as a direct result of the acute infection and he has been told that it is unlikely he will ever recover. When the family wrote to the tour operator, they were not offered any compensation. However, with our help Joseph recovered £10,325, his wife recovered £2,350, and his daughter recovered £3,780. Joseph said “Thanks for your services and your counsel. Our trust in you was never called to question. Many thanks.”

During the holiday they all fell ill with an acute gastric illness. All 4 of them have since developed Irritable Bowel Syndrome as a direct result of their acute infections. They have been told that it is unlikely that they will ever recover. When Maria wrote to the tour operator, she was not offered any compensation. However, with our help Maria recovered £12,810, her sister recovered £14,070 and both children recovered £8,000.
