Illness at Skorpias Marina
Irwin Mitchell successfully negotiated a £35,500 payout for client’s who suffered from severe gastric illness during their holiday to Skorpias Marina in 2000.
In total Irwin Mitchell represented 15 clients, 11 of whom were ill and 3 of which contracted notifiable gastric illness including salmonella and cryptosporidium.
Fortunately the vast majority of clients recovered from their illnesses within a month, however 2 clients developed long term complications including Irritable Bowel Syndrome, for which they continue to receive medical attention.
This case highlights the often less published long term problems which can be caused by poor hotel standards.
The clients noted that the food served often appeared to be reheated and was served on more than one occasion. Some of the food was undercooked and nearly all of it was unappetising.
Following an admission of liability from the tour operator and settlement negotiations between tour operator JMC Holidays LTD and Irwin Mitchell, the clients were awarded £35,500 in compensation. The tour operator also agreed to cover their legal costs.
