Compensation after illness at Praia De Rocha Hotel in 1999

11 holidaymakers win compensation after holidays at the Praia de Rocha Hotel, Portugal in 1999

Irwin Mitchell represented 11 people who stayed at the Praia de Rocha Hotel in May and June 1999, including 1 couple who were on their honeymoon.  A breakdown in food hygiene procedures at the hotel resulted in 9 of the holidaymakers suffering gastric illness and their holidays being ruined as a result.  Fortunately all but 1 of our clients recovered from their illnesses within 3 weeks.  However, 1 person did develop Irritable Bowel Syndrome as a result of a confirmed Giardia infection acquired at the hotel.

Following negotiations and a trial, tour operator Sunworld Holidays Ltd (now trading as Thomas Cook) paid the holidaymakers over £18,000 in compensation.  The tour operator was ordered to cover their legal costs.
