Gastric Illness Onboard MS Serenade Cruise Ship
Husband and wife Michael and Sandra Ray travelled aboard the cruise ship MS Serenade during February and March 2008.
The Tour Operator was Jules Vern, part of the Kuoni Travel Group. The holiday was taken as a celebration of Mrs Ray's 60th birthday and retirement. During the holiday, Mrs Ray, along with other members of their party, began to feel ill with symptoms of gastric illness. Their symptoms included diarrhoea, stomach cramps, and vomiting.
Mrs Ray and her husband believe this illness was caused by the poor standards of hygiene aboard the MS Serenade. The couple allege that the food served on the vessel was unsatisfactory. Complaints included the fact that the chicken seemed to be undercooked and was pink in the middle. It is also alleged that the hot and cold dishes were not served at the appropriate temperatures and that newly cooked food was mixed in with existing food.
Other quality issues concerning the ship were that the deck area and sun beds were dirty and that the facilities on board the ship were not of the expected five-star standard.
Mr and Mrs Ray state that they were aware of a significant number of other passengers who were also ill with similar symptoms during their holiday. It was thought that up to 70% of the ship might have been affected by this gastric illness.
Mr Ray, who has approached Irwin Mitchell Solicitors to act for him on this occasion, said, "I find it wholly unacceptable that the Tour Operator can send holidaymakers on a Cruise ship with such a low standard of hygiene. Without a doubt it ruined mine and my wife's holiday celebrations."
