Primary School Teacher recovers almost £300,000 in Compensation for Injuries Sustained at French Château

A primary school teacher from Manchester has been awarded almost £300,000 in compensation after she sustained severe injuries when she attended a school trip at a château owned and managed by PGL Limited at Grande Romaine, Paris in June 2001.

Mrs M was the duty member of staff for the evening and, shortly before midnight, she went to check on the children in their dormitories to make sure they were all well and settled.  Another member of staff was locked out of her room and Mrs M offered to find the duty member of staff from PGL Limited to obtain a key for her.

Mrs M left the staff quarters alone, but when she did not return, her colleagues became concerned and went to search for her. She was found dazed and confused with cuts, bruising and blood on her arms and legs.  She stated that she had fallen down some steps on the site which were unlit and unmarked in the dark. She had no memory of the fall or where she had fallen.

The incident was reported to PGL Limited staff members on duty and Mrs M was taken to hospital in France where she had x-rays.  She was advised that she had sustained a soft tissue injury to her back, shoulder and arm, that she had fractured her wrist and also chipped her right shoulder.

After her return to England Mrs M continued to suffer from severe pain in her shoulder and attended her local hospital.  She had by this time developed problems with her eyesight and an inability to recognise letters or words and was immediately admitted to hospital for a brain scan.  She was advised that she had fractured her skull and sustained a significant head injury.

As a result of her injuries, Mrs M was not able to return to her much loved teaching career. Her lifestyle was completely altered.

Irwin Mitchell assisted Mrs M to pursue a claim against PGL Limited, successfully recovering almost £300,000 despite significant issues on liability. She is now able to lead a better lifestyle without financial worries and her financial security is assured.
